Department of Tourism

The Department of Tourism was established in 2001, continuing the legacy of previous academic units at the University engaged in teaching and research in tourism. The first such unit, the Department of Tourism Services Economics, was founded on March 1, 1974.

In the 2004/2005 academic year, thanks to the efforts of the Department’s staff, a new specialization – Tourism and Hospitality Management – was launched at the Faculty of Management. A major milestone came in 2007/2008 with the launch of a full degree program in Tourism and Recreation, which led to a steady increase in staff, including experts in economics, physical culture sciences, and the humanities.

Initially, students could choose between two specializations: Hospitality and Gastronomy and International Tourism, offered at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels. Today, the range of specializations is broader, reflecting current market demands, student interests, and faculty expertise. Bachelor’s students can choose from:

  • Modern Hotel and Gastronomy Business

  • International Tourism

  • Entrepreneurship in Recreation and Sport

Master’s students can specialize in:

  • Hotel and Gastronomy Management

  • Congress and Major Event Management

  • International Tourism Management (program taught in English)

Since 2019, the Department of Tourism has been part of the Institute of Management within the College of Management and Quality Sciences. In 2018, Dr. hab. Jadwiga Berbeka, Prof. UEK, succeeded Prof. Dr. hab. Józef Sala as Head of the Department. In 2024, the position was taken over by Dr. hab. Krzysztof Borodako, Prof. UEK.

In recent years, the Department’s staff have conducted numerous team research projects, resulting in a significant number of scientific publications. They also manage external research grants (e.g., from the National Science Centre), sit on editorial boards of academic journals, and actively participate in national and international scientific associations.

The Department places great emphasis on continually modernizing its curriculum and maintaining a high standard of education. Our lecturers are regularly recognized among the top-rated teaching staff in student surveys.
