Department of International Management and Logistics

History of the Department

The Department of International Management and Logistics has been operating since 1996. Until 2024, it was known as the Department of International Management. In its early years, it consisted of three divisions: the Division of Logistics, the Division of Strategic Analysis, and the Division of Human Resource Management. In 2000, due to structural changes at the University, the Division of Human Resource Management was transformed into the Department of Human Resource Management, and in 2005, the Division of Strategic Analysis became the Department of Strategic Analysis.

Since then, the Department has focused on two core areas of research and teaching: international management and logistics. A significant expansion of the Department’s logistics-related activities took place in 2016, with the launch of the Bachelor’s program in International Logistics.

The first Head of the Department was Professor Jerzy Trzcieniecki (PhD, DSc, †). After his retirement, the position was taken over by Professor Janusz Teczke (PhD, DSc, †), who served until his passing in 2018. From April 2018 to September 2024, the Department was led by Professor Piotr Buła (PhD, DSc, UEK). Since October 2024, the Head of the Department has been Professor Krzysztof Machaczka (PhD, DSc, UEK).

Over the years, the Department has developed its academic activity in various directions: general management, management of international enterprises, and logistics. On the initiative of the late Professor Janusz Teczke, the Department transitioned from offering only specializations to establishing two independent degree programs: International Logistics (Bachelor’s, launched in 2016) and International Management (Master’s, launched in 2017). This shift led to the renaming of the Department in 2024 to its current title: Department of International Management and Logistics.

Today, the Department’s research activities focus on a wide range of topics in the field of international management, including globalization and regionalization in Europe and worldwide, organizational destabilization and transformation processes, global trends in enterprise management, business development challenges, and competitiveness building. Key research areas also include logistics systems (transport, freight forwarding, green logistics), supply chain management, and sustainable development, with particular emphasis on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in international companies.

In the field of teaching, the Department emphasizes developing students’ skills in problem-solving, teamwork, interdisciplinary thinking, and identifying cross-border opportunities and challenges. Classes are also taught by business practitioners and international lecturers. To enhance students’ competitiveness in the job market, the Department offers bilingual study programs, where selected courses are taught in English (e.g. Global Sustainable Development, Strategic Management), alongside intensive foreign language instruction.

As part of the International Seminar course, students work on projects with Visiting Professors. These workshops are intensive and project-based, aimed at solving complex business problems while developing students’ language and analytical skills.

The Department supervises the following study programs:

  • International Logistics (Bachelor’s)
  • International Management (Master’s)
  • Specialization in Logistics (Master’s – 3 semesters), designed for graduates of the Bachelor’s program in International Logistics

The Department currently employs 22 academic staff members and 1 administrative employee.

Additionally, the Department is home to an active student community, including both a research club and a student association, which offer opportunities for further engagement and development:

  • CARGO – Student Logistics Research Club
  • Ad Meritum – Student Association
