In the field of people management, a number of challenges have emerged in recent times. These challenges arise from ongoing changes in technology, new business models, as well as other demographic, economic, and political factors, and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. The resulting different situation in which organizations operate can be referred to as the “new normal,” understood as the state to which economic, social, and political systems arrive after a crisis, and which differs from the pre-crisis situation. This situation is also reflected in the sphere of work and people management, prompting the question of the directions for the development of the dominant model of human resource management in recent years, which is focused on creating and delivering value for stakeholders. Will it develop towards strengthening the role of human capital, aligning with the scenario of building a welfare society, increasing leisure time, developing knowledge workers, and other professionals? Or do the observed transformations of work carry the risk that value creation may turn into value extraction and lead HRM towards activities associated with outsourcing work, managing surplus employment, limiting employee benefit systems, and promoting peripheral employment?
Before the theory and practice of people management, there is a challenge of convincingly demonstrating the strategic importance of investing in human capital in organizations, given the influence of the aforementioned contextual factors, as well as developing work and employment systems that support the creation of sustainable value for stakeholders in the new HR ecosystem.
